The Kitchen Remodel Process: What to Expect from Start to Finish
A kitchen remodel is one of the most meaningful investments you can make in your home. It's also one of the most involved. Before you commit, it helps to understand what the process actually looks like — not the idealized version, but the real sequence of decisions, tradespeople, and timelines that a well-run project involves.
Here's how we walk clients through it at Glidden Construction.
Step 1: The consultation
Every project starts with a conversation. We visit your home, look at the existing kitchen, and talk through what you want to accomplish. This isn't a sales call — it's a working session. We want to understand how you use the space, what's frustrating about it, what you like about it, and what your priorities are.
By the end of the consultation, you should have a clearer sense of what's realistic for your home and your budget. We'll tell you honestly if something you're hoping for isn't feasible, and we'll often suggest approaches you hadn't thought of.
Step 2: Design and planning
Once you decide to move forward, the design phase begins. For most kitchen projects, this means working through the layout, selecting cabinetry, choosing countertop materials, deciding on appliances, and finalizing finishes like tile, hardware, and lighting.
This phase takes longer than most homeowners expect — typically four to six weeks — and that's appropriate. The decisions you make here drive everything downstream. Rushing through selections to get to demolition faster is one of the most common sources of mid-project regret.
We use this phase to finalize the scope of work, order materials with long lead times (custom cabinetry typically takes 8 to 12 weeks to fabricate), and pull the necessary permits.
Step 3: Pre-construction
Before any walls come down, we do a thorough pre-construction walkthrough with you. We confirm the scope, review the sequencing, and set expectations for what the project will look and feel like while it's underway.
If you're staying in the home during the remodel — which most clients do — we'll talk through how to set up a temporary kitchen, how we'll protect the rest of the house, and what the daily rhythm of the project will look like.
Step 4: Demolition and rough work
Demolition is fast. The existing cabinets, countertops, and flooring come out in a day or two. What follows is slower: the rough work behind the walls and under the floors — electrical, plumbing, and sometimes structural changes — before anything visible goes back in.
This is also when surprises surface. Older homes in South Jersey frequently have outdated wiring, galvanized plumbing, or other conditions that weren't visible during the estimate. A good contractor documents what they find, explains the options, and gets your sign-off before proceeding. We don't make decisions on your behalf and present you with a change order after the fact.
Step 5: Installation
Once the rough work is inspected and approved, installation begins. Cabinets go in first, followed by countertops (templated after cabinets are set), then appliances, tile, flooring, and fixtures. Each trade follows the previous one in a sequence that's been planned from the start.
A mid-range kitchen remodel typically takes four to eight weeks from the start of demolition to substantial completion. Larger projects with significant structural changes or full custom cabinetry can take longer.
Step 6: Punch list and final walkthrough
Near the end of the project, we do a detailed punch list walkthrough with you. Every cabinet door, every tile, every fixture — a systematic review to identify anything that needs adjustment before we consider the project complete.
